Extended Academic Programs (ExAP) at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte is a unit within the division of Academic Affairs, reporting to the Associate Provost for Metropolitan Studies and Extended Academic Programs. Extended Academic Programs is comprised of the Continuing Education, Distance Education, and Summer School units. In the area of distance education programs and courses, ExAP works in collaboration with academic departments to plan and administer undergraduate and graduate course work at off campus sites and online via the Internet, and also organizes and administers courses offered by the University during the summer terms. Distance Education offers 31 online and site based programs enrolling over 1200 students. Summer School works with the entire campus to offer summer courses and offers approximately 800 summer courses, enrolling more than 11,100 students each summer. While distance education activities are funded by state appropriations, on campus Summer courses are self-funded through the generation of program registration fees/tuition.

Primary Purpose of Position

The Senior Program Manager is responsible for effectively managing all aspects of online, hybrid, and off campus distance education programs, and acts as the liaison for the academic unit offering a distance education program. The major responsibilities can be grouped into areas of program support, student services, compliance activities, and quality assurance.

Summary of Position Responsibilities

Distance Education and Summer School, within the Office of Extended Academic Programs, works collaboratively with academic departments and colleges to ensure an integrated and effective,
institution wide planning (in both the short and long term), marketing, delivery, and assessment of Distance Education and Summer programs and courses. The Senior Program Manager (SMP) is assigned overall responsibility for several specific distance education and/or summer programs, and is also assigned to be the central point of contact on specific issues, services, technologies, etc., that impact distance education and/or summer courses and programs.

Minimum Education/Experience

The position requires a master’s degree and at least two years of work experience in the administration or direct support of educational programs.

Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Exceptionally strong organizational and analytical skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. The position requires a strong service orientation and the ability to exercise good judgment in the handling of many sensitive and confidential matters. Applicants must be experienced in using a personal computer for word processing, spreadsheet, database, and web based applications. Applicants must have experience in and/or knowledge of: contemporary models for distance teaching and learning, including the delivery of support services to students remote from the campus, a variety of distance education/online technologies, marketing principles and strategies and the delivery of programs online and at off campus sites, and to adult learners. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be substituted for the stated qualifications

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Master’s degree in higher education, adult education, educational research/evaluation, or a closely related field. Work experience in distance education at an institution of higher education. Budgeting experience is desirable.
