UNC Charlotte’s Department of Art & Art History seeks a Chairperson to lead the department within the College of Arts + Architecture (CoA+A), which models excellence in teaching, scholarly and creative research, and performance in five creative disciplines: architecture, art and art history, dance, music, and theatre.

The Department of Art & Art History inspires students to expand their vision of the world and themselves through study and practice in Art and Art History. The department aims to foster innovative and thoughtful art practices, scholarship, and arts-based education and believes that art is vital to our students, our university, our communities, and our future. The Department currently offers a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Art, a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Art History, and a
Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in Art with nine concentrations. Additionally, a B.F.A. degree with a concentration in Art Education, and a minor in Art History are offered. An Honors Program in Art History is offered and the department participates in the College Honors Program. Additionally, the department plays an important role in the delivery of required coursework within the University General Education program.

Description of Work

Responsible for the daily operation of the department and the department programs. The Department Chair/ Director will promote excellence in department programs within the University. Chair/ Director responsibilities are classified as professional duties requiring leadership and mentoring of faculty, administrative expertise to include vision, long term and short-term planning, decision-making and coordination of instruction.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Chair reports to the Dean of the CoA+A, sets Departmental priorities in consultation with the faculty, provides vision and leadership in strategic planning, administers Departmental and College policies, and assumes final responsibility for curricular programming, departmental operating budgets, planning documents, self-studies, and annual reports. The Chair takes an active role in, and assumes final responsibility for hiring all faculty and administrative staff, including personnel evaluation protocols. The Chair is responsible for assigning faculty workloads, individual course schedules, and service duties, and coordinates these with university metrics, recruitment functions, and university graduation initiatives. In addition, the chair takes a leadership role in departmental advancement. The Chair represents and advocates for the Department to the Dean and the Provost & Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, and serves as an active member of the arts community beyond the University.

Minimum Experience/Education

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience

The successful candidate will hold a terminal degree in an art or art history discipline or related field, have an established record of artistic and/or scholarly research, provide evidence of effective teaching, and possess demonstrated leadership skills. Preferred additional qualifications include arts administration, fundraising, and artistic or managerial experience in professional arts venues and institutions. This is a tenured position; eligibility for tenure rank (Associate or Full Professor) will depend on the background and experience of the candidate.
