Primary Purpose of Department

The mission of the Department of Special Education and Child Development is to prepare highly effective and ethical professionals who have a positive impact on children, youth, families, community, and schools and who are successful in urban and other diverse settings. This mission is accomplished through teaching, research, and community engagement that lead to improved practice and by working in partnership with schools, communities, and university colleagues.

The goals of the Special Education and Child and Family Development programs are to:

Provide instruction at the undergraduate, masters, and doctoral levels that models research-validated best practice and challenges learners to aspire to excellence. Generate and synthesize knowledge through quality research that informs the preparation programs of the Department. Provide genuine and meaningful service to the public schools and other service providers that informs the preparation programs of the Department.

The Department of Special Education and Child Development faculty strive to create an academic climate in which the dignity of all individuals is maintained. The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, North Carolina’s urban research university, offers approximately 28,000 culturally diverse students a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Since first graduating doctoral students in 2004, the Special Education program has graduated 67 students and in 2012, U.S. News and World Report ranked the Special Education program in the top 20 nationally (3rd year of national ranking) in a report of the best graduate programs for special education in the country. Currently, faculty bring in over $3.1 million in grant funding.

The Department of Special Education and Child Development currently includes 23 full-time faculty members.

Description of Work

Thus, the Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Tenured and Tenure Track Faculty should be interpreted in the context of the related departmental and collegiate goals.
Teaching, Advising, Curriculum and Instructional Development – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, advising and consultation, directing student research, curriculum and instructional development, and grading student work.
Scholarly Research, Creative, and Other Professional Activities – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to participate in expanding the knowledge base of her/his academic field by conducting research or engaging in other creative activities as appropriate to the faculty member’s discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to research may include but are not limited to: research/creative activity that generates new knowledge and/or synthesizes and/or integrates existing knowledge, publication, an on-going agenda for research, scholarly, and creative activity, and are expected to seek extramural support for their work.
Service to University, the Public, and the Profession – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to engage in a program of service appropriate to their discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to service may include but are not limited to: service to the administration and governance of the University, public service, and service to the profession.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Maintain scholarly productivity in research; seek external funds to support research activities. Teach and advise doctoral students with an opportunity to teach undergraduate or graduate courses (face-to-face, hybrid and online). Mentor faculty; provide service to the field and profession; and participate in programmatic development of the college.

Minimum Experience/Education

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Candidates also must have an earned doctorate in Special Education or a closely related field from an accredited university and hold a rank of Associate or Full Professor.

Candidates must also demonstrate the ability to secure external funding, an extensive record of research productivity, ability to mentor doctoral students and faculty, teach at the college/university level, present at national and international conferences, and advocate for the program and field at a national level.
