The mission of the Department of Special Education and Child Development is to prepare highly effective and ethical professionals who have a positive impact on children, youth, families, community, and schools and who are successful in urban and other diverse settings. This mission is accomplished through teaching, research, and community engagement that lead to improved practice and by working in partnership with schools, communities, and university colleagues.

Description of Work

Thus, the Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Tenured and Tenure Track Faculty should be interpreted in the context of the related departmental and collegiate goals.
Teaching, Advising, Curriculum and Instructional Development – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, advising and consultation, directing student research, curriculum and instructional development, and grading student work.
Scholarly Research, Creative, and Other Professional Activities – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to participate in expanding the knowledge base of her/his academic field by conducting research or engaging in other creative activities as appropriate to the faculty member’s discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to research may include but are not limited to: research/creative activity that generates new knowledge and/or synthesizes and/or integrates existing knowledge, publication, an on-going agenda for research, scholarly, and creative activity, and are expected to seek extramural support for their work.
Service to University, the Public, and the Profession – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to engage in a program of service appropriate to their discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to service may include but are not limited to: service to the administration and governance of the University, public service, and service to the profession.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Maintain scholarly productivity in research related to reading assessment, remediation, or development, seek external funds to support research activities, teach undergraduate and/or graduate methods courses, work with the community on reading initiatives, and provide service to the university and profession.

Minimum Experience/Education

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience

Candidates must have an earned doctorate (or earned doctorate by the employment start date) in Elementary Education, Reading, Special Education or a closely related field from an accredited university. Faculty area of expertise for all positions should be in elementary reading, reading assessment, diagnosis and remediation of reading difficulties, and/or reading interventions. Applicants for the Assistant Professor position(s) will be expected to show promise of excellence in research, scholarship, grant funding, and teaching. Applicants for Associate and Full Professor must have a proven record of external research funding, a strong record of scholarship in high-impact journals, excellent teaching credentials, an interest in leading others in developing course curricula in teacher preparation and doctoral programs, and an interest in serving the community’s literacy needs in Charlotte and surrounding districts. The course load at UNC Charlotte for this 9-month contract is 3-2, with a 2-2 load for highly productive researchers. Course load can be further negotiated for grant buy-outs or various leadership options in the College and community. Salaries for each level will be highly competitive.
