This mission is accomplished through teaching, research, and community engagement that lead to improved practice and by working in partnership with schools, communities, and university colleagues.

Description of Work

Responsible for the daily operation of the department and the department programs. The Department Chair/ Director will promote excellence in department programs within the University. Chair/ Director responsibilities are classified as professional duties requiring leadership and mentoring of faculty, administrative expertise to include vision, long term and short-term planning, decision-making and coordination of instruction.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, a growing research university, seeks a Department Chair for the Department of Special Education and Child Development. This is a 12-month position and will begin on July 1, 2018. For this growing and highly successful department, we seek a leader who shares our values of creating equitable and high quality educational and human service opportunities and our strong commitment to the teaching profession. We need an individual with the research maturity and vision to create an environment in which our growing research endeavors can be supported. We seek a leader who can mentor as well as evaluate faculty in research, teaching, and service and one who will build on our commitment to diversity and multicultural and inclusive education in an urban environment.

Minimum Experience/Education

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience

Qualifications include: a doctoral degree at the current rank of Associate or Full Professor from an accredited institution with expertise in special education, child and family development, or gifted education; B-12 teaching and/or administrative experience; a strong record of teaching and advising; evidence of scholarly contributions to the field; and a continued record of effective professional service. Consideration also will be given to having a demonstrated commitment to leadership in diversity, experience in grant management with deep understanding of federal funding, performance review of faculty and staff, outreach to schools and communities, visionary organizational leadership, and national contributions to the field. The chair is appointed by the Provost on the recommendation of the Dean of the Cato College of Education, subject to approval of the Chancellor and Board of Trustees of the University.
