Primary Purpose of Department

The mission of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics is three-fold:

• to provide quality programs and courses of instruction in mathematical sciences and Mathematics Education at both the undergraduate and graduate levels;

• to foster research and other professional activity in the mathematical sciences and Mathematics Education;

• to interact with the larger university community and with appropriate segments of the local, state, and national communities to provide services relating to the mathematical sciences and Mathematics Education.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics aspires to remain at the forefront of the growth and transition of UNC Charlotte into a Research Extensive university of 35000 students. The department set itself on this course early on and is sustaining its development through the extensive range of its responsibilities. The department meets the challenges of offering important and high quality general education courses such as College Algebra and Introductory Statistics to a majority of the University’s students. The department’s undergraduate programs are attracting a historically high number of math majors including future teachers. The department expects to continue to grow its undergraduate programming with attractive contemporary offerings in computational science and a minor in statistics. The department is committed to its high quality graduate programming and expects to continually increase both the size of the Ph.D. program and the number of students graduating each year. The University of North Carolina at Charlotte is a doctoral, research intensive university located in one of the nation’s fastest growing metropolitan areas on an expanding, modern campus. Faculty research interests include such fields as algebra, analysis, computational mathematics, differential equations, mathematical finance, inverse problems, mathematical physics, topology, statistics, and biostatistics. Description of Work

Teaching, Advising, Curriculum and Instructional Development – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, advising and consultation, directing student research, curriculum and instructional development, and grading student work.
Scholarly Research, Creative, and Other Professional Activities – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to participate in expanding the knowledge base of her/his academic field by conducting research or engaging in other creative activities as appropriate to the faculty member’s discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to research may include but are not limited to: research/creative activity that generates new knowledge and/or synthesizes and/or integrates existing knowledge, publication, an on-going agenda for research, scholarly, and creative activity, and are expected to seek extramural support for their work.
Service to University, the Public, and the Profession – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to engage in a program of service appropriate to their discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to service may include but are not limited to: service to the administration and governance of the University, public service, and service to the profession.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Required qualifications are a Ph.D. degree or equivalent in statistics, biostatistics, financial statistics, or other area of applied statistics, with a strong research interest in data science; a commitment to establishing a productive research program, and a commitment to excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The essential duties and responsibilities include teaching two classes per semester, conducting research and performing services as assigned by the department and the university.

Minimum Experience/Education

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience

This position is part of the department’s effort to support the data science program at UNC Charlotte. Therefore, preference will be given to applicants with expertise and experience in computational statistics and big data, especially with applications in banking, health, energy, or retail; a strong commitment to interdisciplinary research and commensurate experience; potential for external funding; and a demonstrated commitment to teaching a diverse student body.
