The Department of Communication Studies has 27 full-time faculty with areas of emphasis in Health Communication, Media Studies, Organizational Communication, Public Relations, and Rhetoric. The department serves approximately 1,300 majors and 25 M.A. students. The department’s primary mission is to provide high quality instruction to its undergraduate and graduate students, and to contribute significantly to the understanding of communication issues as they affect people’s lives, especially in the Charlotte metropolitan region. Through its teaching, scholarship and service the department is committed to serving diverse populations.

Description of Work

Thus, the Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Non-Tenure Track Faculty should be interpreted in the context of the related departmental and collegiate teaching goals.

Teaching – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, and grading student work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Required qualifications include a master’s degree in communication or in another appropriate field, along with the demonstration of:

• Experience coaching intercollegiate forensics and the ability to lead a forensics program
• An ability to teach undergraduate courses in any number of contexts supported by the department (health communication, organizational communication, public advocacy, public relations, and mass media).
• An ability to mentor graduate assistants and graduate coaches.
• An ability to transport students, as evidenced by a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
• A commitment and ability to work with a diverse student population of undergraduate students.

The successful candidate will direct and grow what is currently a small competitive individual events program typically with the assistance of a part-time graduate assistant coach in addition to teaching two undergraduate courses per semester. Director of Forensics duties include student recruiting, coaching students in individual events, organizing tournament participation, significant travel to 3-5 competitive weekend tournaments around the country per semester, and managing a forensics activity budget. Instructional duties include the ability to teach courses in the department’s undergraduate core curriculum and/or in one or more of the department’s undergraduate instructional tracks (health communication, organizational communication, public advocacy, public relations, and mass media).

Finalists will be asked during their screening interview to discuss how the topics of diversity and inclusion are incorporated into their teaching and coaching.

Minimum Experience/Education

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned masters and/or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience

Preference will be given to applicants who can evidence the following job experiences: directing a successful individual events program, supervising a graduate assistant coach, teaching other communication courses unrelated to forensics, administrating budget and expense processes, engaging in alumni relations efforts, and managing fundraising campaigns. The successful candidate must showcase evidence of a commitment to promote diversity as a value in the department, college, and university.
