Primary Purpose of Department

The Department of Reading and Elementary Education’s goal is to prepare professionals to successfully teach in a rapidly changing society and to make positive contributions to the learning of K-12 students. The College and the Reading Education program strive to develop a deep understanding of, and respect for, diversity among students and colleagues. The Department prepares elementary teachers and reading specialists at the undergraduate and graduate levels and contributes to the College’s Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction.

Description of Work

Thus, the Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Non-Tenure Track Faculty should be interpreted in the context of the related departmental and collegiate teaching goals.

Teaching – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, and grading student work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in elementary education in areas such as but not limited to, instructional design and planning, designing integrated and interdisciplinary instruction, teaching diverse learners, and assessment. The successful candidate will also serve on committees and assist with other department activities such as school partnerships. A 4:4 teaching load (which may include student teaching supervision) is expected.

Minimum Experience/Education

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned masters and/or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience

To qualify for a Lecturer, applicants for the position should have:
-Master’s degree or higher in elementary education or closely related filed.
-Three or more years of successful teaching experience at the elementary level (Grades K-6)
-Commitment to continued professional development and student success

To qualify for a Senior Lecturer, applicants for the position should have:
-Master’s degree or higher in elementary education or closely related field with evidence of continued professional development
-Minimum of six years of full-time teaching experience
-Demonstrated excellence in teaching, and commitment to student success
-Evidence of leadership in instruction and instructional innovation

To qualify as a Clinical Assistant Professor, applicants for the position should have:
-Earned doctorate from a regionally accredited university in elementary education or closely related field
-Potential for effective teaching and service
-Ability or definite promise in the mutually agreed upon areas of responsibility
-Ability and willingness to participate in department, college, and university affairs as determined at the time of appointment

Other required qualifications include a current North Carolina license or eligibility for licensure. Preferred qualifications include college or university teaching experience, certification by the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards, experience in teacher supervision, mentoring beginning teachers, and/or facilitating teacher professional development, and an ability to contribute to the College’s goal of preparing teachers to work with diverse learners.

Necessary Licenses/Certifications

Current NC Teaching License or eligibility for licensure.
