Primary Purpose of Department

The Department of Computer Science is experiencing significant growth in enrollment and externally funded research. The Department doubled its size over the past 5 years and is currently the academic home for over 2,100 students pursuing BA, BS, MS, and PhD degrees. The Department of Computer Science is one of the three Departments in the College of Computing and Informatics. Department’s current research and education strengths include visual and video analytics, natural language processing, knowledge discovery, distributed systems and networks, software engineering, robotics and cognitive computing.

Description of Work

Teaching, Advising, Curriculum and Instructional Development – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, advising and consultation, directing student research, curriculum and instructional development, and grading student work.
Scholarly Research, Creative, and Other Professional Activities – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to participate in expanding the knowledge base of her/his academic field by conducting research or engaging in other creative activities as appropriate to the faculty member’s discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to research may include but are not limited to: research/creative activity that generates new knowledge and/or synthesizes and/or integrates existing knowledge, publication, an on-going agenda for research, scholarly, and creative activity, and are expected to seek extramural support for their work.
Service to University, the Public, and the Profession – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to engage in a program of service appropriate to their discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to service may include but are not limited to: service to the administration and governance of the University, public service, and service to the profession.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Successful candidates will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, conduct research in their fields of expertise and participate in interdisciplinary activities.

Minimum Experience/Education

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience

The Department is seeking applicants with specialization in
1. Data science with research interests in data management, big data, deep learning, computational statistics or probabilistic programming.
2. Interactive visualization and visual analytics; Senior candidates may be considered for the appointment as the Director of Charlotte Visualization Center.
3. Data intensive high-performance computing and systems, Internet of Things.
4. Cyber-physical systems with humans in the loop, human-automation interaction, robotics and computer vision.
5. Quantum information processing including algorithms, communication, computation, cryptography and experimental platforms.

Candidates must hold PhD degree in Computer Science or a closely related discipline, have demonstrated excellence in research and be committed to excellence in teaching, social justice and equity. Experience with industry partnerships is preferred for mid-career appointments and will be considered a plus for junior level appointments.
