The DSI at UNC Charlotte is an industry-university-state partnership, supported by the Academic Affairs’ Office of the Provost, the College of Computing and Informatics, the Belk College of Business, the College of Health and Human Services, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and other academic units.
The mission of the Data Science Initiative is to (a) develop analytics talent, (b) define, and drive the research analytics agenda, thus leading to improved applications of analytics in social, environmental, business, government, and economic domains.
DSI provides an effective solution to the challenge of “Big Data” by creating education, training, and research programs in data science and analytics, as well as integrating them with business experience.

Primary Purpose of Position

The position assists the Data Science Initiative unit and the Data Scientist conduct research and develop hardware infrastructure solutions to improve the capabilities of new and existing system to support faculty and students in their research and teaching.

Summary of Position Responsibilities

This position develops hardware infrastructure solutions to address research, teaching and general technical requirements. This position also employs security best practices to ensure that the system is safeguarded from unauthorized access. In addition, the position produces new processes to reduce the redundancy and to make best use of data storage, access, management and analysis of the systems. The position also performs configuration, management, monitoring and enhancing the physical, virtual and cloud based servers, storage and overall infrastructure of the college and department such as Hadoop cluster and associated analytics software. This position also assists the College of Computing & Informatics HelpDesk as tier 3 support for the DSI’s platform users.

Minimum Education/Experience

Graduation from a four- year college or university with a major in computer science or information technology or related degree and at least three years of experience in operations analysis and design, system programming and closely related area; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Exhibit a thorough understanding of the complexities inherent in administering both physical and virtual Linux server clusters based on RedHat Enterprise Linux using WMware based virtualization that integrate both external LDAP and Kerberos identity management using industry-standard tools and applications.
Deploy virtual servers in a hypervisor environment.
Working knowledge or experience with Apache Hadoop or Cloudera Data Management is preferred.
Experience with cloud technologies.
