Primary Purpose of Department

The Department of Engineering Technology & Construction Management at UNC Charlotte delivers five undergraduate and three graduate programs. The Department seeks applicants with the ability to effectively teach courses supporting one or more of our undergraduate programs (Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Management, Electrical Engineering Technology, Fire Safety Engineering Technology and Mechanical Engineering Technology) and one or more of our graduate programs (Construction & Facilities Management, Applied Energy & Electromechanical Systems, and Fire Protection & Administration).

Description of Work

Thus, the Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Tenured and Tenure Track Faculty should be interpreted in the context of the related departmental and collegiate goals.
Teaching, Advising, Curriculum and Instructional Development – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, advising and consultation, directing student research, curriculum and instructional development, and grading student work.
Scholarly Research, Creative, and Other Professional Activities – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to participate in expanding the knowledge base of her/his academic field by conducting research or engaging in other creative activities as appropriate to the faculty member’s discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to research may include but are not limited to: research/creative activity that generates new knowledge and/or synthesizes and/or integrates existing knowledge, publication, an on-going agenda for research, scholarly, and creative activity, and are expected to seek extramural support for their work.
Service to University, the Public, and the Profession – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to engage in a program of service appropriate to their discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to service may include but are not limited to: service to the administration and governance of the University, public service, and service to the profession.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Candidate is expected to teach and perform research in support of at least one of the department’s undergraduate AND graduate programs.

This position will support the Safety and Safety Management concentrations currently in development in the Department.

Expertise may include any safety area to include Occupational Health and Safety, Construction Safety, Industrial Safety, Environmental Health, Environmental Pollution, Industrial Hygiene, Ergonomics and Human Factors, or others.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop courses in one or more areas of safety, as well as, a funded research program that complements and supports multidisciplinary research efforts within the Department.

In some instances, candidates with previous administrative experience and interest may be considered for additional program director duties. Such administrative appointments usually require 15% of time for those duties.

Minimum Experience/Education

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience

Required qualifications include an earned doctorate in an associated field such as Occupational Safety/Environmental Health, Safety Engineering, Safety Science, Industrial Hygiene, Construction Engineering / Management, Mechanical Engineering, Fire Protection, or a closely related discipline.

Candidates must possess excellent leadership, organizational, teamwork, interpersonal, and communication skills, and must be able to multi-task in a fast-paced environment that serves a diverse student population.

Relevant professional practice or industry experience is desired with preference for candidates with professional registration or certification (CSP, CIH, PE, etc.), and prior teaching experience. Candidates with a proven record of funded research may be considered at higher rank.

Rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications and experience. Candidates seeking Associate Professor or higher rank and/or administrative appointment should outline interest and qualifications for those appointments in the cover letter.

Necessary Licenses/Certifications

At least one professional certification or license or ability to obtain is desired. Preferred certifications include PE, CSP, CIH or similar.
