Primary Purpose of Department

The Department of Engineering Technology & Construction Management at UNC Charlotte delivers five undergraduate and three graduate programs. The Department seeks applicants with the ability to effectively teach courses supporting one or more of our undergraduate programs (Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Management, Electrical Engineering Technology, Fire Safety Engineering Technology and Mechanical Engineering Technology) and one or more of our graduate programs (Construction & Facilities Management, Applied Energy & Electromechanical Systems, and Fire Protection & Administration). Additional information about the department and programs offered can be found at This position, coupled with a tenure-track position will be the initial hires to develop and deliver programming in OHS, safety management and sciences as we move to develop concentrations and degree programs in these areas.

Description of Work

Teaching – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, and grading student work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will demonstrate ability to effectively teach undergraduate courses in one or more areas of electrical systems, electromechanical systems, applied energy systems or related area.

Supervision of student project teams, course development, and course and program assessment and improvement are also required faculty responsibilities.

Candidates must be able to work independently and with a diverse team; demonstrate excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills; and be able to multi-task in a fast-paced environment that serves a diverse student population as well as faculty, alumni, and employers. As such, candidates must be able to operate within and help create an inclusive environment that facilitates student learning and development.

The selected candidate will develop and teach courses in electrical, electromechanical, applied energy or related areas.

This position may be either 9 month or 12 month, depending on department and program needs and candidate interest. In some instances, the opportunity exists for the candidate to assume a term appointment as program director in addition to faculty appointment and associated responsibilities.

Typically, administrative responsibilities may represent approximately 15% of time for those duties.

Minimum Experience/Education

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned masters and/or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience

Candidates with a doctorate in Electrical Engineering, Energy, Mechanical or related areas may be considered for appointment as Assistant or Associate Professor of Teaching depending upon overall qualifications and experience.

Candidates with a Master of Science degree in electrical or mechanical engineering, engineering technology, engineering management, systems engineering, or related degree may be considered for appointment as a Lecturer.

Candidates with industry, engineering, construction or safety experience are desired.

Preferred candidates will have professional work experience in engineering design, consulting, or a manufacturing environment.
Preferred qualifications include PE or other relevant certification and prior teaching and/or program development experience in electrical, electromechanical or energy area.

Necessary Licenses/Certifications

At least one professional certification or license or ability to obtain is desired. Preferred certifications include PE or similar.
