The Student Union is a 200,000-sq-ft facility built in 2009 and serves as the community hub for UNC Charlotte students, faculty, staff and guests. It is home to student government, student organizations, meeting rooms, dining, a 210-seat movie theater, an art gallery, a bookstore, a computer store, and additional lounge, retail and programming space. Cone University Center, built in 1963, stands as one of the original four campus buildings. Today it houses a variety of student services, event space, dining, and administrative units including Main Street Market, After Hours, CRES (Conferences, Reservations and Event Services), Venture Outdoor Leadership, the Center for Graduate Life, the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life, the Office of Volunteer Services, and more. Both facilities are thriving environments for student activity, student employment, programs, services and events, and are well utilized on a daily basis.

Primary Purpose of Position

The Executive Director is responsible for the overall administration and leadership for the Popp-Martin Student Union, Bonnie E. Cone University Center, NinerTech Computer Store, and University Conference, Reservations and Event Services (CRES) Office.

Summary of Position Responsibilities

The position directly supervises five professional staff, with oversight for an additional fourteen professional staff, thirty-two general utility positions, four maintenance mechanics, two administrative staff and 150 student employees. The 196,000-square-foot Student Union and the 116,000-square-foot Cone Center have operating budgets totaling $6 million with an additional $1 million generated from Conference Services and $3 million in sales from the NinerTech store.

The Executive Director actively collaborates with staff from Student Activities, Recreational Services, Business Services, Athletics, Facility Management, Financial Services and other members of the campus community to provide high end experiences and facilities for the benefit of the student body. He/she develops and implements long-range strategic, renovation, and equipment replacement plans; provides tactical direction for operations and revenue generation; administers all aspects of human resource management (hiring, supervision, evaluation, and professional development); serves as advisor to the Student Union Advisory Board and other facility-related student committees; and provides overall management and leadership for the department. The Executive Director represents the SUAR department and division of Student Affairs on various committees, task forces and local, state and national organizations.

Minimum Education/Experience

• Master’s degree and seven years of progressive experience managing/leading a multifaceted student union organization.
• Strong multi-level supervisory experience with professional, trade, technical and para-professional positions.
• Ability to develop a cohesive and highly motivated team.
• Demonstrated ability to develop/manage budgets and oversee and allocate fiscal resources.
• Understanding of Conference, Reservations and Event Services.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to listen, clearly articulate thoughts/directions/expectations and develop reports/proposals and make presentations.
• Knowledge of best practices and trends related to student unions, student affairs, retail operations, and higher education administration.
• Political and organizational sensitivity.
• Skill at developing effective partnerships, negotiating contracts/agreements, resolving conflict.
• Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities, render thoughtful decisions and motivate others to levels of excellence.
• Sound understanding of the values and philosophy of the student union, a passion for learning and a demonstrated commitment to student success.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Master’s Degree with 10+ years of experience in a similar setting. Experience managing retail operations.
