Primary Purpose of Department

The mission of the Bioinformatics & Genomics Department is to develop novel computational approaches to important biological problems, and to provide training in the science that underlies them.

UNC Charlotte’s Bioinformatics and Genomics Department has the leadership role in bioinformatics at the NC Research Campus (NCRC) at Kannapolis. The Bioinformatics Services Team at NCRC provides bioinformatics services to the NCRC and the surrounding life science community.

Primary Purpose of Position

This position will serve as the microbiome domain expert within the Bioinformatics Services Division.

Summary of Position Responsibilities

Major Duties and Responsibilities
1. Provide research, consulting and technology solutions to support microbiome research and development projects.
2. Develop workflows for standard microbiome or metagenomics data analysis.
3. Interact with collaborators on data analysis projects, including experimental design input, data analysis and visualization of results.
4. Stay current on latest research and analysis methods and techniques. Work with cluster administrators to test and install latest analysis software.
5. Participate on grants and publications.

Minimum Education/Experience

M.S. degree required in bioinformatics or closely related field specializing in microbial genomics.

1. Significant experience analyzing microbial genomics data sets.
2. Skill with relevant software analysis packages.
3. Comfort with working from the command line in Linux or Unix environments. HPC experience a plus.
4. Experience applying statistical tests to large data sets
5. Thorough knowledge of at least one scripting language (e.g. Python, Perl, shell-scripting, etc.) is a must as well as using R or SAS.
6. Excellent written and oral communication skills

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Ph.D. is preferred.

Experience in one or more of the following areas:
(i) analysis of large data sets generated from mixed microbial (metagenomic) communities from human sources, external environment or associated with plants or animals;
(ii) use of next-generation sequencing to track development of antibiotic resistance or to link changes in microbial phenotype to the content of genes and genomes;
(iii) source tracking of pathogens across space and time in the external environment or within industrial, agricultural or hospital settings;
(iv) utilizing microbial genomics to for molecular epidemiological studies and precision medicine;
(v) visualization of microbial datasets;
(vi) use of computational tools to enhance agriculture and nutrition by manipulation of plant-associated microbes or gut microbiome.

Necessary Certifications/Licenses

The candidate must also be a U.S. citizen or Green Card holder to comply with U.S. export policies.
