Primary Purpose of Department

The Counseling Center at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte supports the academic, personal, and interpersonal development of UNC Charlotte students by providing short-term individual and group counseling, psychological assessment, consultation for faculty, staff, parents, and students, and educational programs to the campus community.

Primary Purpose of Position

Under the supervision of the Associate Vice Chancellor for Health Programs & Services & Director of the Counseling Center, this position provides direct service to students, faculty and staff in the form of individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, clinical assessment, outreach programs, consultation services, supervision of trainees, research and evaluation, and service to the University community.

Summary of Position Responsibilities

The selected candidate will conduct individual and group counseling and psychotherapy, consult with faculty and professional staff who seek assistance dealing with students, and provide outreach services and training seminars to students, faculty, and staff. Administer and interpret individual psychological tests, as well as conduct research projects that pursue questions of applied value for the field of social work or clinical psychology.

Minimum Education/Experience

The successful candidate will possess strong counseling skills within a brief model; clinical experience with diverse populations; enthusiasm for collaboration within the Center and throughout the University community; and demonstrated interest in university counseling.
The following are required qualifications that must be met before the start date:
1. Earned Doctorate from an APA-accredited Counseling or Clinical Psychology program or a Master’s Degree in Social Work
2. For psychologists, completion of an APA-accredited internship; for social workers; completion of all required supervised practice experiences for licensure

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Strong clinical skills within a brief model; enthusiasm for collaboration within the Center and throughout the University community; and demonstrated interest in university counseling.
Preferred qualifications include expertise and experience in one or more of the following: men’s issues; Autism spectrum disorder; substance use assessment and treatment; case management and referral services; biofeedback; and outreach to traditionally underrepresented student populations.

Necessary Certifications/Licenses

Eligibility for licensure as a Psychologist or Clinical Social Worker in the State of North Carolina.
