This position is designated as ‘mandatory’ and, when contacted to report to work, its incumbent is expected to reach the campus as expeditiously as possible using normal precautions as dictated by the adverse weather conditions.

Primary Purpose of Position

There has been a significant tree cover for the University over its history. With the tremendous amount of past and future growth on Campus, there are initiatives for replacing and upkeep of this vital asset of the University. In this urban setting, the Urban Forest must be maintained at a high level with professionalism and expertise. The Urban Forest is an asset to the University totaling approximately 3 million dollars; therefore, there is a high demand for continued specialized upkeep resulting in the need for this new position. The result of this position will provide a healthy and safe environment as well as insure it continues to remain an aesthetically pleasing Campus.

Minimum Education/Experience

Completion of high school and two years of experience in the performance of the full range of journeyman level tasks associated with the trade(s) areas related to the position’s role; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Essential Job Duties

1. Responsible for the performance of and oversight of Arboricultural work for the Campus Tree Canopy.
2. Perform tree removals as needed.
3. Perform tree care as needed.
4. Oversee vendors and contractors on Campus that will perform work on the Campus Tree Canopy.
5. Coordinate projects related to work on the Campus Tree Canopy.

Other Work Responsibilities

1. Perform and/or coordinate other tree work related projects on Campus.
2. Assist with the oversight of the Campus tree inventory.
3. Provide data entry and updates to Campus tree inventory.
4. Perform other duties as assigned and/or designated to support operations.

Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

1. Three years in performing tree removals and corrective tree pruning.
2. Experience with climbing and the use of bucket trucks, lift devices, chippers, etc.
3. Thorough experience with all pieces of tree equipment, chainsaws, safety and all PPE’s.
4. Thorough knowledge & experience of proper pruning techniques, tree health, pest & disease knowledge, etc.
5. Good knowledge level of tree species and varieties, growth needs, etc.
6. Arborist certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
7. Tree inventory database experience which includes inventory entry and management of the data.
8. Understanding, knowledge and experience with construction around existing trees and methods of tree protection.
9. Strong tree planting and techniques – knowledge & experience.
10. Ability to effectively communicate the English language (reading, writing, interpretation and comprehension) required.
11. Effective skills in verbal, written and interpersonal communications.
12. Computer literate.
13. Knowledge and skill with Google Chrome, Microsoft Word and Excel, and willingness to learn new programs.
14. Ability to effectively work/interact with persons from different backgrounds and cultures.
15. Ability to foster and create an atmosphere of teamwork.
16. Selected candidate must have the mental and physical capabilities to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations

Necessary Licenses or Certifications

1. Arborist certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
2. Valid Driver’s license.
