Monday – Friday; flexible hours between 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, with occasional weekend hours as necessary.

Primary Purpose of Position

We are seeking a skilled gardener responsible for maintaining safe, clean and functionally attractive display environments in the gardens and greenhouse at UNC Charlotte. Work includes the cultivation and care of plant collections and supporting structures and machinery. This position assists with horticultural practices including, but not limited to, planting, weeding, watering, fertilizing, pesticide use, pruning, and trail maintenance. The ability to supervise and lead a small work crew is required. Work includes collaborating with staff and other workers to install, construct and maintain projects/displays in all areas of the botanical gardens and promoting the knowledge and understanding of plants. This position requires a basic knowledge of plant cultivation. Work requires the use of special tools, materials and utility systems typical for plant cultivation. Work requires limited work some weekends during the year.

Minimum Education/Experience

Graduation from high school; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Essential Job Duties

PRIMARY DUTIES:
1. Maintain safe, clean, and functionally attractive display environments in the gardens and greenhouse.
2. Horticultural care of plant collections, including troubleshooting problems and contributing solutions.
3. Operate, organize and maintain a wide variety of motorized and non-motorized equipment, tools, and materials.
4. Maintain and perform minor repair to garden and greenhouse structures (arbors, fences, and displays) and utilities (irrigation, mist and cooling system).
5. Collaborate with other staff on construction, maintenance, garden/greenhouse display, design, renovation and garden events, including plant sales.

  • A Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in horticulture or botany (or equivalent work experience) is preferred.
  • A specialized knowledge of tropical plants, particularly orchids is desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with management/staff and interact with guests/visitors in a cheerful and positive manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead small work crews.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage one’s own time efficiently and effectively.
  • Candidate should possess a working knowledge of best horticultural practices in both the field and greenhouse including, but not limited to:
    a. Plant identification
    b. Planting, pruning, weeding, watering, fertilizing, mowing, mulching, and pest control.
    c. Accurate mixing, measuring and applying of pesticides, fertilizers and irrigation under supervision.
    d. Safe and effective operation, servicing, and maintenance of power equipment (trenchers, tillers, string trimmers, blowers, etc.).
  • Ability to perform the physically demanding jobs required of someone employed in the field of horticulture
    a. Kneel, bend, stoop, and crouch repeatedly over the course of a day
    b. Be able and willing to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
    c. Be able and willing to work outdoors in inclement weather
