Primary Purpose of Department

The department is responsible for facilitating and coordinating the research and assessment related activities within the Division of Student Affairs and select university wide initiatives through a variety of campus partnerships. The department also coordinates and supports strategic planning and institutional effectiveness measures across the division.

Primary Purpose of Position

The Research Associate will contribute significantly towards advancing the culture of evidence within Student Affairs by collecting, manipulating and analyzing institution and student performance data to support professionals in their quest to connect program, department, and division activity outcomes with actionable data.

Summary of Position Responsibilities

Assist the Director and Senior Research Associate to provide consultative leadership to the division staff as they conduct self-study reviews, identify and evaluate program and student learning outcomes, develop strategic priorities and plans, evaluate program effectiveness, assess functional outcomes, and allocate resources.
1. Perform special focus research projects as requested (i.e., department, program, and/or activity outcomes effect on student attrition, persistence, and degree completion; impacts of strategies to improve students’ transition into and through UNCC, etc.).
2. Create custom reports by assembling data for specific identifiable student populations; provide additional data for lists of specific students and compile historical data to identify and analyze trends.
3. Perform basic statistical analyses for projects and reports. Interpret data and develop recommendations based on findings.
4. Respond to special requests to extract data from various data systems (various data warehouses to meet time sensitive needs and produce statistical data reports and electronic data displays.
5. Incorporate peer, regional, and national comparisons benchmarks, organize data reports and present findings to appropriate key audiences.
6. Design and present findings and reports in visually appealing and easy to understand formats. Develop graphs, reports, infographics, and presentations of project results. Generate routine and ad hoc reports and data files.

Minimum Education/Experience

Minimum qualifications include a master’s degree in assessment and measurement, statistics, student affairs, higher education, education research or other research-oriented discipline related to assessment and evaluation, statistics, or social science with one or more internship or graduate assistantships with an emphasis on assessment, evaluation, or research activities.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Preferred qualifications include a doctoral degree in assessment and measurement, statistics, student affairs, higher education, education research or other research-oriented discipline related to assessment and evaluation, statistics, or social science with one to three years’ experience within student affairs coordinating and/or conducting assessment activities at the program, department or division level.

Necessary Certifications/Licenses

All applicants are expected to have significant experience with the following software applications or product equivalents: Microsoft Office Professional Suite, SPSS, and Tableau, in addition to the CampusLabs Baseline, ComplianceAssist and Engage platforms. Experience with computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software (Nudist, NVivo, Miner, etc) is desirable.
