This position is part of the BES- Floater program. 1st Shift, 5:00 AM – 2:00 PM; Tuesday – Saturday with a variable schedule in accordance with building needs.

This position is designated as ‘mandatory’ and, when contacted to report to work, its incumbent is expected to reach the campus as expeditiously as possible using normal precautions as dictated by the adverse weather conditions.

Primary Purpose of Position

To maintain clean and sanitary conditions in classrooms, labs, lecture halls, offices, common areas, restrooms and various other areas within Academic, Athletic, and Administrative buildings on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

This position performs building services, recycling and floor tech. assignments throughout Main campus to ensure that the building meets established Unit standards. May be assigned special project work as directed. This position will be supervised by the BES South Area Manager position.

Minimum Education/Experience

Some knowledge of cleaning procedures, one year of experience demonstrating the ability to follow instructions in operating specialized floor-cleaning or other cleaning equipment and in performing medium to heavy physical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Essential Job Duties

The Building Environmental Technician – Journey provides custodial support for the University. The position will be supervised by the BES South Area Manager.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

1. Care and clean academic buildings, offices, studios, other state buildings and the grounds surrounding University and State facilities.
2. Perform building services, recycling and Floor Technician assignments throughout the university Main Campus to ensure that the building meets established unit standards.
3. May be assigned special project work as directed.
4. Maintain equipment in good working order.
5. Compile and maintain checklist and report needs to BES Supervisor or appropriate lead BES Technician in the absence of Supervisor.
6. Maintain various types of floor surfaces to include vacuuming, spotting and shampooing or water extracting carpet, dust mopping, and stripping or spray buffing resilient tile floors.

Other Work Responsibilities

1. Assist BES Supervisor and Lead Technicians in testing and making recommendations on supply and equipment purchases.
2. Must be able to properly use and care for all manual and power equipment and chemicals required in floor maintenance, housekeeping, and recycling functions.
3. Follow established Facilities Management, UNC Charlotte and State policies and procedures.
4. Perform other duties as assigned and/or delegated to support all FM operations. This includes project work during breaks in the academic calendar and exterior snow removal during inclement weather conditions as assigned by area manager.

Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

1. High school diploma or GED equivalent.
2. One year of experience demonstrating the ability to follow instructions in operating specialized floor-cleaning or other cleaning equipment and in performing medium to heavy physical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience required.
3. Three years’ experience in institutional housekeeping with floor care experience preferred.
4. Knowledge of cleaning procedures.
5. Ability to properly use and care for all manual and power equipment and chemicals required in Building Environmental Services and floor care functions.
6. Excellent customer service orientation.
7. Ability to foster and create an atmosphere of teamwork.
8. Ability to effectively communicate the English language (reading, writing, interpretation and comprehension) required.
9. Effective skills in verbal, written and interpersonal communications.
10. Computer literate. Knowledge and skill with Google Chrome, Microsoft Word and Excel, and willingness to learn new programs.
11. Ability to effectively work/interact with persons from different backgrounds and cultures.
12. Selected candidate must have the mental and physical capabilities to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
